Notes for John WENZEL:

Captain John Wenzell was born in Boston, Massachusetts.  It
      appears
that he was christened John Jacob Wenzell, as the records of
      Baptisms at
King's Chapel in Boston contains the following entry.  "1765,
      Sept.
27, John Jacob Wenzell, son of Henry and Mary Wenzell.
      Infant sponsors:
Jacob Hederick, John Tinges and Anna Tinges."  As his younger
      brother,
born in 1767 was named Jacob, it is probable that John's middle
      name was
dropped as no further reference to it can be found.  Captain
      John
is supposed to have lived in or near Boston until the start of the
      Revolutionary
War when his mother having died his father removed to Holliston,
      MA.
He was about ten ears old at this time and soon after reaching
      Holliston
he was "put" to Deacon Marsh, of that town with whom he remained
      for three
years.  Then at the age of 14 he chose to learn the cooper's
      trade
and became an apprentice to a Mr. Newton, who also lived in
      Holliston.
After the expiration of his apprenticeship he commenced business
      for himself,
remaining in Holliston until he was married in 1790.  He and
      his wife
are said to have lived with her parents until May 1791 when they
      moved
to Framingham, MA and lived in a house owned by Phillip Metcalf.

On Sept. 2, 1801 he bought of Jesse
      Everett
a farm of about 70 acres situated in the South-westerly part of
      Framingham
near the Holliston line.  This is now included within the
      limits of
Ashland which was incorporated in 1846.  Here Captain John
      lived the
rest of his life, and the farm has been owned by his descendants
      up to
the present time. (1942)  in a workshop adjoining the house
      he carried
on his Coopering business.  It is said he would never allow
      the rising
sun to find him in bed, and commencing his labors at daybreak, his
      incessant
hammering would put an end to the slumbers of his household, in
      early summer
mornings.  He belonged to a company in the 5th Regiment and
      3rd Division
of MA Militia.  On Feb. 21, 1803 he was commissioned
      Lieutenant, and
on May 6, 1806 he received a commission as Captain, which
      appointment he
held until Jan. 30, 1808 when he was discharged.  He was
      afterwards
known as Captain John Wenzell.  In 1824 he was one of the
      proprietors
of the South Burying Ground which was situated in the
      southwesterly part
of South Framingham.  Here he and many of his family are
      buried.
For many years the custom prevailed in Framingham of letting out
      the care
of the town's poor to the lowest bidder for terms of five
      years.
In 1828 he was the lowest bidder and at the time of his death
      there were
18 paupers on his farm.  They were kept in a building which
      he erected
for their accommodations in the rear of his house.  He
      married in
1790 Hephzibah, daughter of Deacon Joseph and Lydia (Brown)
      Bigelow of
Holliston.  She was born Sept. 24, 1767, and survived her
      husband
and died Dec. 10, 1841 aged 74.  He died Sept. 12,
      1830.  They
      had five children.

Notes for JOHN WENZEL JR.:

His early life was spent at home and his education was acquired in
the public schools of Framingham, MA.  After his marriage in
      1814
he removed to that part of the town known as Park's Corner, where
      he lived
the rest of his life.  Like his father he was interested in
      military
affairs, for the records show that on March 18, 1816 he was
      appointed ensign
of the 4th Regiment, 1st Brigade, 3rd Division of the Mass
      Militia.
On April 14, 1818, he was promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant
      which
office he held until Sept. 10, 1818, when he received his
      discharge.
For some time during his early life he was engaged in teaming,
      taking produces
to market in Boston and bringing out supplies for stores in
      Framingham,
MA.  For a time he conducted a grocery store in a portion of
      his house.
In 1834, he was engaged in manufacturing shoe pegs, having a shop
      for that
business for many years supplying numerous boot and shoe
      manufacturers
in and around Boston.  At that "Wenzel's shoe pegs" had quite
      a reputation.
Mr. Wenzel also became quite prominent as a builder of roads and
      bridges.
Many of the highways in and around Framingham being built by
      him.
The last part of his life was spent in the manufacture of boots
      and shoes.
He took an active interest in town affairs and his voice was heard
      in town
meetings.  From 1833 to 1843 he was on the board of
      selectmen. He
was moderator of the town meetings in 1830, 1839, 1845, and
      1857.
In 1855 he was appointed chief engineer of the fire department.

He also held numerous minor offices in the town.  For a
      number
of years he was a Justice of the Peace and before him the village
      attorneys
tried their cases, accordingly he was known as "Esquire Wenzel",
      during
the later years of his life.

12. JOHN3 WENZEL (JOHN WENZEL2 JR., HEPHZIBAH1 BIGLOW) was born February 12, 1829 in Framingham, Massachusetts. He married JENNIE RICHIE LEACH August 1856, daughter of JAMES LEACH and MARIA BLACK.
Notes for JOHN WENZEL:

His early life was spent at home where he attended school and
      worked
in his father's Peg Shop.  At the age of fifteen he taught
      school
in Ackworth, NH at this time he attained his growth, and wearing a
      full
beard he appeared much older than he really was.  When he was
      twenty
years old he entered the employ of his maternal grandfather, Abner
      Haven
of Framingham.  On Oct. 31, 1849 with his brother Henry he
      embarked
on a ship ARGONAUT for California and the gold fields.  the
      voyage
around Cape Norn occupied about nineteen weeds and on March 12,
      1850 they
arrived in San Francisco.  It was here that Henry died of
      cholera
in November.  The following spring Mr. Wenzel returned to the
      mines.
he spent a year and a half at Big Oak Flat.  Several months
      on the
American River and a year at Nevada City.  he prospected on
      nearly
all the rivers south of the Yuba.  He returned to in the
      spring of
1855 and at once found employment in the Civil's Engineer's
      department
of the railroad that was being constructed from South Framinham to
      Northboro.
he lived a year and a half at Northboro and it was there that he
      met Miss
Leach who became his wife in Aug, 1856.  The railroad being
      completed,
he removed to NY, where he was in the Bailed Hay business.

For two years he was in Boston and Worcester Railroad freight office at Worcester. later he was engaged in the boot and shoe business removing to Ashland he carried on the shoe Peg business which had been started by his father. Owing to ill health he was obliged to give up the Peg business and for a time he ran and express from Boston to Ashland until he was seriously injured by being thrown from his team. During the Civil War he was employed for more than three years in the Springfield Armory. For a time he was in Chicopee, MA but soon returned to Springfield where he remained until 1875. During this time he was for six years traveling salesman for a boot and shoe concern in Springfield, Worcester, and Boston. In 1873 he was in the Shoe Jobbing business for himself. The panic of 1873 forced him to the wall; he continued business until 1875 when he sold out and accompanied his brother-in-law, Edwin R. Tucker, to Colorado, where they had purchased a gold mine. This venture proved a failure, they returned the following year. He then removed to Boston where he has since resided and has been engaged as a salesman for various wholesale shoe concerns. He is a lover of music and had a rich bass voice. He frequently sang in church in the place where he lived and after coming to Boston, was a member of park Street Church Choir for several years. In Aug. 1856, he married Jennie Richie Leach, daughter of James and Maria (Black) Leach of Northboro, MA. She died at Boston Feb. 3, 1897. They had two children.
