Bigelows in The American Revolution

Appendix B pages 380-382;
Bigelow Family Genealogy Vol II;

Blue Gray Line

     The American Revolution involved the greater portion of adult male Bigelows between ages 16 and 65 who were living in the period 1776-81. Wherever possible in this volume, actual military records have been quoted to identify the Bigelows who served in the colonial cause, and the military unit in which the ancestor served. Every one of the original colonies has produced publications listing military units of the Revolution and the men who served in them. These have been used and quoted throughout the preceding volume.
     Since the majority of the Bigelow family was living in Massachusetts, the series Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolution is the source most frequently quoted throughout. Volume 2 of this multi-volume work contains many pages on Bigelow military service. However, in some cases, it was impossible to identify with total accuracy the Bigelow who served in a particular unit or engagement. The very nature of the war, short enlistments interspersed with leaves, made continuous military service infrequent, and a man might serve during a half-dozen or more periods of time in various companies of militia. In the military records, be might or might not be identified by home town, age, or physical description. Those entries in Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolution which remain unidentified to the editor's satisfaction are listed herewith, and correspondence concerning the soldier and his identity invited.
