On 18 Jan 1836, Samuel Bigelow sold the land in Berlin Twp. to Henry Diehl and on 30 Sep 1836, Samuel and Phebe Bigelow sold both parcels of land in Ellsworth Twp. to Henry Diehl. This may indicate that Phebe did not join her husband in Ohio until the summer of 1836. (Deed from SamuelA. Bigalow to Henry Diehl of Ellsworth Twp. dated 18 Jan 1836; deed from Samuel and Phebe Bigalow to Henry Diehl of Ellsworth Twp. dated 30 Sep 1836 )

The deed for the first land that he bought in Streetsboro Township (89.8 acres in lots 68 & 78) was dated 1836 and gave his residence at that time as Ellsworth Twp., Trumbull Co. [now Mahoning County], OH ). Thus he apparently went to Trumbull County from Connecticut, then moved on to the next county (Portage) 3 years later. This farm appears to be adjacent to Evergreen Cemetery, on Ohio Route 14. He later purchased additional land in Streetsboro Twp. He also owned land in Riga Twp., Lenawee Co., MI in 1862 and sold it to his daughter Harriet in March, 1863. (Deed from David Cochran to Samuel Bigelow dated 7 Oct 1836; deed from David Cochran to Samuel Bigelow dated 15 Mar 1839; deed from Heirs of Titus Street to Samuel Bigelow 13 Aug 1840;  1857 Atlas, Portage County Historical Society, Ravenna, Ohio; 1995 Ohio Atlas & Gazeter, DeLorme; deed from Samuel Bigelow to Maria H. Kimes dated 11 Mar 1863; will of Samuel Bigelow dated 11 October 1862 seen at Portage County Historical Society, Ravenna, Ohio).

Portage and Trumbull Counties in northeastern Ohio are part of the Western Reserve of Connecticut, also called New Connecticut, and this entire region had many early settlers from Connecticut. The first settlers arrived in Streetsboro in 1822, although the Township itself did not become independent of the adjoining townships until 1827. (Harlan Hatcher, The Western Reserve; The Story of New Connecticut in Ohio, Bobbs-Merrill, 1949)

In Salisbury, he married Phebe Minard (born 20 Oct 1793 in Salisbury) about 1809. All eight of their children were born there and the seventh, Hiram L., died when about a year old and is buried at Town Hill Cemetery, Salisbury.(Forge: The Bigelow Society Quarterly, 17(2):27,30; 1988; Salisbury, Connecticut Records, Volume 1: Vital Records 1730-1800, Gravestone Inscriptions by Donna Valley Russell, Catoctin Press, Middletown, Maryland, p.114)

Phebe Minard Bigelow died 18 July 1849 at the age of 56 years, 6 months. In 1850, Samuel was recorded on the U.S.Census with the family of his daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Robert Smith. He married 4 Nov 1850 Elizabeth R. Bow (born about 1798), who survived him. He died 23 Dec 1863 and was buried in Streetsboro.
