Subject: Levi Bigelow
Hi Rod. Al Streit from Albany, California suggested that I get in touch with you about our extended family. He had provided me with some genealogical data several years ago. Levi Bigelow (1788 - 1869) is my 3rd great grandfather. My great-grandmother, Mary Rosalie Schultz (1866 - 1901) married Charles Davis Beale in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1893 Here are some notes from my PAF records: "About 1900, his wife, Rose, took their daughter, Rosalie, down to the Union Station in Chicago, Illinois to say goodbye to Charles. This was the last time that Rosalie ever saw her father and there was never any further contact with him to the knowledge of Rosalie. According to his father's obituary, Charles was living in Oakland, California in 1904. A review of the SOUNDEX files of the U.S. Census for 1910 does not reveal a Charles Davis Beale for California, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri or Oklahoma. The 1930 U.S. Census identifies a Charles D. Beale as living in West College Place Precinct in Walla Walla, Washington with Ella M. The adopted daughter is not shown. He owned his home an estimated value of $3,000. They had a radio and the family was living on a farm. The Census respondent stated that Charles was first married when he was 23 years of age, he had not attended school or college any time since September 1, 1929 and he was able to read and write. The record states that he was born in New York and that his father was born in Massachusetts and his mother was born in Virginia. Charles was a farmer on a truck farm. He apparently had his own business. He was not a military veteran. The "No. of farm schedule" was "8". The Washington Vital Records provides a death date. The Census states that Charles was first married when he was 23 years old and that matches my records. In June 2011, John Kracha went to Walla Walla and reviewed public records in the Walla Walla Public Library Adult Room.
The following was extracted from Polk's Walla Walla City Directory (R.L. Polk & Co. Seattle WA): 1921 to 1924 Stock breeder and dealer; 1925 to 1927 Stockman; 1929 to 1935 Farmer; 1939 r. West Spruce Street; 1946 "Charlie" at Blue Mountain Sanatorium. Residence was in College Place 1922 to 1949. "Illness takes CD Beale, 78 Charles Davis Beale of Southwest Second street, College Place, who retired from the position as caretaker of the Blue Mountain sanitarium in August of 1946 because of ill health, died Tuesday morning in a Walla Walla hospital. He was 78 years old. Coming to the Walla Walla valley in 1910, he worked several years as foreman at the Blalock orchards and in 1932 took over the job as caretaker at the sanatorium." (Walla Walla Union Bulletin, March 1, 1949) The obituary states "March 1 at a local hospital, Charles Davis Beale of Southwest Second Street, College Place, aged 78 years: husband of Ella May Beale of College Place; father of Marshall Beale of San Diego, Calif.; and Mrs. Don (Maxine) Tilken of Safford, Ariz.; brother of Mrs. H. L. Messinger of Saugerties, N.Y., and Al M. Beale of LaGrange, Ill. Born October 30, 1870 in New York city. Member of Episcopal church. Remains at the Marshall funeral home. Funeral notice later. (The mentioned sister Mrs. H.L. Messinger is probably Helen Louise born 25 September 1868) He is buried at Mountain View Cemetery, WALLA-MV-52-7-4, Walla Walla, Washington I believe that this Charles Davis Beale is my grandfather and that he remarried a second time. I cannot find a Marshall Beale in San Diego or Maxine Tilken of Safford, Helen Louise Beale Messinger of Saugerties and I am not able to identify Al M. Beale. I am contacting you on the outside chance that your vast holdings might dispute/ confirm my suspicions. If the records do support that this is my grandfather and you would like citations, please let me know and I will provide the additional information. Thanks. John Kracha Now in: Chula Vista
