Otis 8 BIGELOW



16355.514     Otis 8 BIGELOW, son of  Harvey 7 ( Harvey 6 , Otis 5 Asa 4, Lieut. John 3, Joshua 2, John 1) , and Laura (HURLBURT) BIGELOW, was born at LaGrange, Cass co, MI on 18 August 1854.  His first marriage was in 1882 to Anna Tuttle, daughter of Joseph S. Tuttle, leather and lumber merchant of Niles.  Otis was organist in the Congregational Church in Dowagiac.  Otis married secondly on 24 April 1915 Julia Lieber.  She was a daughter of Alois and Mary (Luthringer) Lieber and born 17 August 1884.  Otis learned the trade of an upholsterer in Chicago after which he returned to Dowagiac and was employed for a time.  In 1873 he went to Chicago in order to take lessons on the pipe organ and acquired great proficiency in that art.  He served 15 years as leader of the Dowagiac Cornet Band and was organizer of the Bigelow Orchestra (now known as the Opera House Orchestra) and was a cornet player of more than ordinary ability.  He has instructed bands at various places throughout the country. Otis's father was a cabinet maker and furniture manufacturer and Otis followed that trade in addition to being a music store owner and musician.  He died at Dowagiac, Cass co., MI on 14 December 1942.
