My wife passed away recently and looking through her jewellery collection
were two Victorian mourning rings. Gold rings with a strand of woven
hair set in a series of clasps. Typical 19th century style.
We have some family heirlooms in brooches and pendants so know the custom.
Inscribed in one was A. E Bigelow and the other A.E Bigelow - S.L Hoffman.
Very neat script but the S L may have been different letters. She did not
have an expensive collection as she picked up interesting pieces in estate
sales and small jewellery shops. No idea where she picked them up.
Could have been back east in New England. Jones The Jeweller, Hornby
and Robson, Vancouver estimated value at $300 each. But we do not want
to sell them to any collector and would like to see them returned to the
Hoffman-Bigelow descendents. Duncan
