V
ern was born in Carrot River, SK the first child of Gideon and Hazel (Byers) Bigelow. He schooled there and in his late teens was employed as a partsman for Perini Corp on the construction of the E.B. Campbell hydroelectric dam on the Saskatchewan River north of Carrot River. Upon completion of the project he headed to California and was employed by Guy F. Atkinson Construction, a company recognized for excellence in constructing highly-engineered and complex projects.

Vern's first posting was in Dayton, WA where he and his high school sweetheart, Gail Drury, were married, September 21, 1963. Over the next 16 years they moved with the company to Los Banos, CA; Kennewick, WA; Mica Creek, BC; Sonora, CA and ended his construction career as the Business Manager for Atkinson at the W.A.C. Bennett dam near Hudson Hope, BC.

Wanting a permanent home for his two girls to finish their schooling they purchased a lot on the west side of Okanagan Lake and proceeded to look for employment. In July 1979 Vern and his brother Don purchased the Lumby Farmer's Supply, renaming it Bigelow's Hardware. It was a rough start in the early 80s, but their wives, both nurses kept the “wolf from the door”. Over the next 20 years the little store in Lumby, BC grew and in 1999 they decided to sell to three of their staff.

Vern and Gail were avid golfers, they enjoyed curling and snowmobiling when the location permitted. They loved entertaining friends, playing cards, dinners out and life at their lake shore home. For many years Vern was on both the Board of Directors of IRLY Distributors and Community Futures North Okanagan. Upon retirement they moved to Osoyoos, BC. Until his diagnosis they loved their winter home in Mazatlan. Finally settling in Creston, BC to be near daughter Janet and husband Brian.

Vern is survived by his loving wife Gail, daughters Lynda (Blake) Gainor of Nanaimo; Janet (Brian) O'Keefe of Creston; his grandchildren Brandon Morrice of Vancouver; Kowan O'Keefe of Washington DC; Carson O'keefe of Denver, Colorado; his brother Don (Shirley) Bigelow of Vernon.

In respecting Vern's wishes a celebration of his life will be held at a future date.
