16A54.3    Hopestill 6 BIGELOW, son of Samuel 5( Hopestill 4 , Ebenezer 3, Joshua2, John1), and Elizabeth (FULLER) BIGELOW, was born 28 February 1786 at Whitehall, Washington county, NY. The family gradually moved westward during the early 1800's, and settled in Steuben county, where Hopestill lived many years. He married, on 12 February 1817, Charlotte Bates. She was born 19 August 1793, (see below). For a letter written by him to his only son Artemas, see the biography of his grandfather-16A5. Hopestill died at Newmarket, NJ on 17 April 1867. His wife died 19 August 1878.

Hello Rod, I found your page and thought I would give you a little bit of information that might help you in your research. The mother of Artemus is Charlotte Bates, born around 1793. In the 1850 census, there was a 14 year old Gilbert Bates residing with them... In the Cemetery that Hopestill and Charlotte are buried, are the graves of Amanda Bates Dunham and her husband... Amanda is the sister of Gilbert Bates... Gilbert Bates is Sergeant Gilbert Henderson Bates who became a bit of a self made celebrity after the civil war. Gilbert's father was a David Bates who was an engineer, and Gilbert's Grandfather is David Stanhope Bates, the famous engineer that worked on the Erie canal and other projects in our country's history. David Stanhope Bates was born in 1777 and is believed to be Charlotte's brother. I know it needs to be confirmed, but I though it might help to know this info. I am the GGG-Grandson of Gilbert Bates.
