John ⁶ BIGELOW

16164.6 John ⁶ BIGELOW, son of Nathan ⁵ (John ⁴ ,Joshua ³ , Joshua ², John ¹), and Elizabeth (OAKES) BIGELOW, was born 18 August 1780 at Mt. Holly (now called Clarendon), VT. Before 1800 the family moved to Crown Point, Essex county, NY. There he married Harriet Holden, daughter of Jonathan and Sarah ( ___ ) Holden. She was born 04 March 1791 at Ludlow, V'T. They farmed in the vicinity of Crown Point all their lives. John served in the War of 1812, and his widow claimed pension. John died 28 May 1847 and Harriet on 24 December 1881. They are both are buried at White Church cemetery, Crown Point. (see new notes belo w)

16164.64 Augustus, b 10 Nov 1822; d 18 Nov 1899 Crown Point, NY; not known if married, but no issue; res Crown Point, NY. His lengthy will distributed property and money among nieces and nephews.

I googled my family name (Bigelow) and was surprised to find your
webpage. Hartwell Holden Bigelow (married to Jane Webster) were my
great, great aunt and uncle. Jane's sister was my great, great
grandmother. My mother was born and raised in their house (which they
built in the 1800's); I spend many summer's there in Sierra
City,California. I believe Hartwell and Jane's portraits still hang in
the living room.
They, and many of their family members, are buried in the family plot
in Sierra City. My mother still has many of their family pictures,
bibles, and other items that came from their old homestead.
Small world indeed!

Bigelow House, Sierra City, CA:
This old house was built in 1867 for Orison Bigelow who also owned a local gold mine and hotel in town. The story goes that a builder from upstate New York was hired to build the house and it does resemble the front gable side wing houses seen around towns in that area.
The house stayed in the Bigelow family until purchased by the first "outsiders" in 1990 who are current owners.
The old house has been updated in recent years starting with new electrical wiring, a screened porch, insulation, new siding milled to exact original specifications, central forced air heating, and new double pane wood windows just to name a few projects. There is also new interior and exterior paint.
The Cottage was built in the 1980's and sits on its own separate parcel. It has been recently renovated and has a kitchen and bathroom. It is approximately 384 square feet in size and sits on a lot that is approximately 15,246 square feet.
The grounds are nicely landscaped and include several fruit trees and huge stately black oaks. The outbuildings include storage sheds and workshops and an old Chicken Coop complete with raised bed gardens. Newly installed paved driveway leads you to house and Cottage with parking and turn around. The picture below is a House, not the Hotel mentioned above.......ROD

John BIGELOW, was buried in White Church Cemetery in Crown Point. He served in the military War of 1812. He
was born on 18 Aug 1780 in Mt. Holly, Clarendon County, VT. He died on 28 May 1847 in Crown Point. or perhaps died in
Wallingford, VT. John BIGELOW and Harriet HOLDEN were married on 1 Dec 1812. Harriet HOLDEN (daughter of Jonathan HOLDEN
and Sarah) was buried in White Chruch Cemetery in Crown Point. She was born on 4 Mar 1791 in Ludlow, VT. She died on
24 Dec 1881 in Crown Point. Harriet's brother Charles Holden married her husband's sister Polly Bigelow.
John BIGELOW and Harriet HOLDEN had the following children:
