My husband's mother was a Bigelow - Florence - her grandfather was George, son of Daniel W. 7, son of Joseph
(6), son of Nathan (5). By the way, Joseph is buried in Oak Grove Cem, in Tomah, WI along with about 30 other Bigelow's.
His tombstone says he died 5-14-1859. If you want to e-mail me I can tell you who else is buried there along with most of there dates. I also have found another Bigelow around Whitewater, WI - a Daniel Bigelow who died 8-27-1895 and O.A.
Bigelow who died 2-27-1891. If interested - let me know. Rebecca Thompson

JOSEPH 6 BIGELOW THE SHOEMAKER

For the last year and a half Forge has been presenting the sixth-generation of a large group of Bigelows whom we term the Crown Point(NY) group, because their father Nathan Bigelow was an early settler in Essex county, NY.  This issue we present one of the youngest son  Joseph  Bigelow; in April we will conclude the series in a longer article on the lesser-known sons and the daughters.
Joseph 6 BIGELOW, son of Nathan 5 (John 4 ,Joshua 3 , Joshua 2, John 1), and Elizabeth (OAKES) BIGELOW, was born 15 February 1787 at Clarendon, VT.  When he was a child, the family moved to Essex county, New York, settling near Crown Point.  Joseph became a shoemaker, and in later life a farmer.  About 1810 he married Catherine Chilcott, who
was born 16 May 1794 perhaps in Vermont, though other sources say the Chilcotts were from New Jersey.  They lived at Crown Point, then at Westport, and had a family of fourteen children, several of whom died young.  Their births are recorded with accuracy in the Bigelow genealogy.
On the 1850 census Catherine, presumably because of failing health, was living at Westport with son Amos, while Joseph (age 65) and the youngest children were in the home of son Oscar.  Catherine died on 19 November 1856 and is buried at Stephenson cemetery, Westport.  About the same year several of the surviving children migrated to Monroe county, Wisconsin, taking up land near the village of Tomah, where descendants live to this day.  Joseph also moved to Wisconsin, and while there is no official death record or headstone noting the date, family tradition says he died in the spring of 1859.

Children of Joseph  and Catherine(Chilcott) Bigelow, all born Essex county, NY:

i     Rosetta D., born 11 Sept 1811; died 25 Feb 1812.

ii   William A., born 2 Jan 1813; died the same day.

iii   Nancy Maria, born 5 Feb 1814; died 19 Apr 1895 Franklin twp, Houghton
county, MI; married circa 1831 Horace B. Ormsby.  7 children.

iv   William A., born 18 May 1816; died 12 Feb 1817.

v     John W., born 4 Jan 1818; died 16 Dec 1884 Moriah, NY; married 1842
                          Maryetta Fish.  8 children.

vi    William A., born 31 Mar 1820; died the same day.

vii    Polly L., born 8 Nov 1821; died 30 Sept 1822.

viii    Rosetta D., born 6 July 1823; no death date, but deceased before 1895;
married Alonzo Chapman.  Family not known. (see below)

ix     Oscar W., born 25 Sept 1825; died 18 Aug 1895 Tomah, WI; married (1)
                          10 May 1847 Delia Quillets(also spelled willets);(2)27 Apr 1865 Lucinda
(Murdock) Gleason.  7 children, including Judge Roscoe Bigelow of NV.

x     Amos A., born 2 Aug 1828; died 17 Sept 1906 Tomah, WI; married 3 July
                          1855 Abby Chester.  7 children.

xi    Lucinda L., born 14 Feb 1831; no death date, but deceased before 1895;
married Henry Fish of Tomah, WI.  Family not known.

xii     Daniel W., born 4 Jan 1833; died 2 Jan 1904 Tomah, WI; married (1)1858 Ann Harp, and after her death, (2)Cornelia Harp.  Total of 12 children by family tradition, of which we identify 8.

I have had a wonderful time reading about my family, from Rosetta Bigelow on back.  She married Alonzo Chapman and two generations later my grandmother came along.  Wonderful reading!
One question re Nathan 16164.  On the John 1616 page it says he died in1822, and on his page is says 1816.
I am using my husband's login.  My email is susanrainville@hotmail.com     Sue

I am the Great-great-granddaughter of Alonzo Chapman and Rosette or Rosetta Bigelow.  They had two sons, Amos Chapman and Hiram Agustus, who married Rachel Ann Deal or Dale.  I can find nothing about her parents except a possibility her parents were "Dale" and "Paugh", but I remember my Grandmother saying her name was Rachel Dale and she died when my Grandmother, Rachel Irene Grace Chapman (b4/8/1888, d 4/2/1970) was a little girl.  The birthdate I have for her, Rachel Ann Dale (or Deal), copied from the family Bible, was 3/18/1848.
Alonzo's obituary (I have a copy) says he was born 12/11,1807 in Crown Point, Essex County, NY.  He died 8/20/1893 in Sherman, Dunn County, WI, and is buried in the Sherman cemetery.  The obit also says he lived for a long time in Tomah, WI.
I have the dates of all of Hiram Agustus's and Rachel Dale' children and some of their deaths and spouses, and of course my mother and her brother, and only the name, approximate birth date and death date of her half-brother. (My Grandmother was married twice.)  If you would like that information, I would be happy to send it to you.
I have so enjoyed your pages!  It was a thrill to find them and confirm what my Grandmother had said while I was growing up, that we are Bigelows. Funny, tho' she thought Bigelow was Scottish!
One web site says Alonzo Chapman may have been born in Scotland (with a ? after it.  That may be where she got the Scottish.    Susan Sandegren Rainville

I have found a lot of info on the Chapman family of Wisconsin (my Grandmother's family), and combined it with the info from your Bigelow pages from Rosette Bigelow and Calvin Alonzo Chapman. You may not recall, but I am a great-great-granddaughter of Alonzo and Rosette.
Alonzo's name was listed as Calvin Alonzo on his son's (Hiram Agustus Chapman)marriage license application when he (Hiram) married his third wife, after the deaths of my great-grandmother and Hiram's second wife.
Interestingly, there is a Calvin Chapman in the Crown Point 1810 census, but my Calvin Alonzo would only have been three years old.  Might be his father, though.
Thanks,

I've found 3 Great Great Uncles military records.  First of all, Amos A.-
16164.9At, joined Company H 5th NY Cavalry at the age of 34 in 1861 in Crown
Point NY.  This unit saw a lot of action, including Bull Run, Antietam,
Gettysburg and Appomattox Court House.  His two younger brothers got
involved after they moved to Wisconsin with my Great Great Grandfather
Joseph after Catherine Chilcot Bigalow died (her gravestone stands in the
Stevenson Cemetery in Westport NY).
Daniel W.-16164.9Ct joined the 49th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment in 1864
which saw virtually no action (guard duty at some obscure fort).

However, Hiram O. -16164.9E joined the 10th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment in
1861 and was involved in Sherman's Campaign, seeing action at the Battle of
Peachtree Creek (site of which was less than a 1/2 mile from where I now
write this).  He was mustered out in Marietta a few months later (a few
miles North of Atlanta) and therefore did not participate in Sherman's
infamous March to the Sea.  (I just knew I wasn't the first of my direct
family to see Atlanta!)

Tom
