Lucy Lake Notes (Find a Grave)
"In reviewing the mortality in this town for 1888, it seems fitting to place on record a few facts in relation to the life of one who reached, at the time of her death, the greatest number of years, namely, Mrs. Lucy B. Hartwell. It is seldom indeed that the death of a private citizen calls forth such words of praise and so many farewell tributes as are paid to the memory of this sketch. Mrs. Hartwell was twice married; her first husband being Seneca Bigelow of this town, a man of unusual ability and deep piety whose noble life left an influence for good which is dominant in this town today. The deceased having no children adopted two of her sister's children; Ambrosell and Mary Andross, who were carefully trained, receiving all the care and love of the fondest parents, and which was equally cherished for their 'dear old auntie' to the time of her death. Mrs. Hartwell made it her home with Mrs. John Stever of East Worcester with whom she had the best of care and a pleasant home, and as Mrs. Stever's health failed she came to live with Mrs. Henry Brown in this village where her long life came peacefully and beautifully to its close, surrounded by every comfort and receiving the tenderest care. The funeral services were held from the Congregational church of this place. A wreath of palms lay upon the casket, and many rare and beautiful plants were placed around the bier in front of the pulpit. The services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. F. H. Coffran. He spoke with deep feeling and his words were full of beautiful thoughts ..." [The Worcester Times (Worcester, NY), January 10, 1889, pg. 3, col. 3]
