John 3, Joshua 2, John 1) BIGELOW and Sabrina (UTTER) BIGELOW, was born at Troy, Bradford co., PA in 1824.  When still a boy he went with his father, R. D. Bigelow, to Upper Canada, where he lived about four years, when they moved to Wisconsin, where he worked at the blacksmith trade about ten years. He came to Iowa in May, 1850, where, locating in Washington township, he spent three years. Bought the place where he still resides, in Williamsburgh, in 1868. Farming and blacksmithing were his principal business.  He married Harriet Elizabeth Vargason (Vargesen) (also mentioned as Miss Harriet E. Varyason) of Wisconsin; She was born 14 December 1827, the dau of John and Elizabeth (Dalton) Vargason. She died 12 August 1897 at Huron, Beadle County, SD  They lived in Woonsocket, South Dakota where he was a blacksmith.  He died 26 November 1888 in Woonsocket.  James L. Bigelow was one of the early pioneers. There were only two married men in Independence at the time he came. He ground the corn for his bread seven weeks, in a coffee-mill. He has passed seventeen days at a time without seeing the face of a white man. There was only one corn mill in the county, and people came for sixty miles to grind.  Hi Rod...My name is Vernon Whiting and I was introduced to your web-site by a cousin while I was searching for descendants of a James L. Bigelow who married Harriet Vargason (my mother was a Vargason).  I found James, but was
unable to get into the site...said I needed to contact you.  While perusing your site, I found something very interesting...We are apparently distant cousins on the Whiting side also.  Your John Bigelo's sister, Elizabeth and Richard Butler are my 8th great grandparents.  Susanna Butler married Elisha Whiting, Sr.  I have them all in my database...small world, huh?  I would be
very interested in what info you have on James...do you know the names of his children??  Thank you so much for your time.
Vern

I noticed that Jim Gould has written you. I too sent an Email some days ago, as I had discovered your great family history and informed him of the information available there.  I am also a decendent of Mary 7 Bigelow and Dr. E.R. Utter as well as Roderick and Sabrina Utter Bigelow.  Dr. E.R. and Sabrina were brother and sister to my great grandfather.  I have a lot of history about that family and would be glad to share with anyone who might be looking for information.  I have been searching for information on Roderick.  If there is anything or anyone that would be willing to share, my E-Mail is C.Helen@pensys.com.
Thank you!!   Carol Helen Utter Carlson.
More 2:
Dear Rod Bigelow:  Just visited your Society page again and what a surprise to find all of the information on Roderick and Sabrina Utter Bigelow and family. I have two comments to add.  I believe you made an error on locations. Rock County, Johnstown and Jefferson are both located in Wisconsin - not Pennsylvania.  Second, Elizabeth Betsy could have been two different people. They had a daughter by that name and Sabrina's brother, Benedict Birch Utter(my grgrandfather) had a daughter by that name.  They lived at Cold Spring, just south of Jefferson in 1850.  She could have been helping Sabrina with the children or just visiting.  Also the Rockwell household in Jefferson was another Sister-Sally Utter Rockwell.  There was a third Elizabeth Betsy(another sister) born in 1811 but she lived in Port Dover, Ontario. Both of the other two were born in 1834. I will check the 1850 census and see if there is a difference. I hope this does not confuse anyone.

They moved to Canada. Once Blanche became pregnant with Elsie they moved back to the USA so she would be an American citizen.
Gram pa worked on the railroad, He was a gang Forman for 15 to 20 men, who unloaded coal for the steam locomotives. They would push coal cars up on a raised track and unload the coal in bins. Ten dump it into the locomotive tenders. When they did away with the Humphres and put in an elevator coal Shute my dad operated that on the day shift. A night employee let the cable on the elevator run out and while my dad was putting them back on, he got his hand tangled in the cable. It almost tore his arm off. Later he got blood poisoning in his arm and died from it. At the age of 39 years 4 months 4 days.
He was well liked and a good husband, father and provider for the and take care of 7 children. His wife got a widows pension from the state, and with what money her husband left her she supported all the children. She washed dishes in restaurants and hired out to do house work. During the 1930 C.P.A. had sewing rooms where the government made clothes for the needy. She worked din the sewing rooms when her husband was alive.
they lived in a small farm house about 1 mile out side of Huron S.D. When her husband died she sold the farm and she had a small house in Huron. It had 2 bedrooms and a combination kitchen and dinning room, and it had an enclosed front porch. It was crowed but they managed.
