Dee Anne (Dea) 9 BIGELOW

Dee Anne (Dea) Biglow at the age of 16

1555E.5435      Dee Anne (Dea) 9 BIGELOW, dau of Abraham Lincoln 8Samuel Smith 7 ( Andrew Craig , Samuel 5, Abraham 4, Thomas 3, Samuel 2, John 1 and Laura (WILLARD) BIGELOW, was born on June 3, 1893 in Archibald, Ohio. When her family removed to Ashland, Wisconsin, she attended "The Teacher's College of Superior" which is now Wisconsin University-Superior. It was there that she met and fell in love with Herbert L. (Bert) Beglinger. He was the son of FRIDOLIN and EMMA (DOPP) BEGLINGER (see below).  He was born March 22, 1895 in Superior, Wisconsin, and died 1975 in Superior, Wisconsin. Bert, also a young student, stole his mother's wedding band, and eloped with Dea in 1914. The family was quite upset, but grew to love Bert almost as much as Dea did. Bert was a teacher and later became the Principal of Superior Schools. Dea was the President of Wisconsin State PTA. Dea also belonged to the Womens Temperance Union, helping gain women the right to vote. At the age of 35, Dea succumbed to Spinal Tuberculosis. During her illness, she helped to get the Mantoux test (TB test) brought into this country so that people could be tested for exposure. Two years later, in June of 1930, Dea passed away in Superior, WI. From the accounts of her daughter, Elizabeth, she was a very vivacious young women, who always had a cause. She fought for people's rights. Dea also had an artistic bent. She and her husband Bert, began the "Little Theatre of Superior," and often acting in roles themselves.

iii. JOHN BOWDEN.
iv. BETH BOWDEN.

1555E.54352    Elizabeth Jane Bertha 10 BEGLINGER, was born December 2, 1916 in Superior, WI.   She married HOWARD VONSUSKIL April 5, 1940 in 15 Buffalo Ave., Paterson, NJ (Home Wedding), son of PAUL VONSUSKIL and ADA ISAACS.  He was born in Paterson, NJ. Betty as she was better known, ran away from home, in Superior, Wisconsin, after her mother died, and her father, Herbert Beglinger, remarried. She finished High School in Superior. She came East to New Jersey, Wisconsin, worked for a few years to put herself through Nursing College.  She attended Nursing College and graduated, becoming a nurse.  She married after this, and continued on in the Nursing Field. 8 years after marriage, she became divorced, with two children.  She focused herself on supporting her children.
She had a wonderful career as a Registered nurse and fully enjoyed her vocation.  She loved children and helped people who had less than her, sometimes going broke doing so.  She gave everything she owned. At the age of 77, she had a forced retirement in 1993, Sussex County, NJ, and came to live with her grand daughter and Great grandchildren, in Montague, NJ.  She did not drive a car, so it made getting around a little difficult for her independence, however, Lisa was home often and took her out.  She passed away October 5, 1998 in Port Jervis, New York. It was on a Monday, October 5th, at 9:30pm, after collapsing at the Christiansen residence.  Lisa and the children were at home at the time.
"Betty," or "Gram" as her grandchildren called her, was the best grandmother alive.  She spoiled her "children" and they kept her young at heart. Today, they are certain that she is with God, and no longer suffers the disappointments of life.  Today, she enjoys fellowship of her mother, whom she greatly missed, and now WE greatly miss her. Her favorite song was "I can't get started," and her favorite Hymn was "In the Garden." She hated meals that contained chicken, and she made the best Turkey dinner! Family and roots were important to her. She contributed quietly to mankind and the needs of fellow sufferers. She never received accolades for her services, but the unrestrained love that others felt for her, was/is deep.  She will not be forgotten.
Her granddaughter had a dream/vision of her shortly after her death, and in the dream Betty appeared in a "glorified" body.  It was as if a "window" was opened up in heaven, and her grand daughter could see inside for a moment. Betty appeared without physical infirmity (no glasses, small perfect nose, etc.) of an indeterminate age.  She was vital, assured, possessed wisdom, and spoke without moving her lips.  She smiled and said she was "Supremely Happy." Her garment was similar to a church robe, voluminous, and multicolored, like a stained glass window.  The colors themselves seemed to possess a life on their own, and continually changed into other colors.  The colors were vibrant as God's light was reflected on them.

Born in Superior, Wisconsin, to Dea (Dee Anne) Bigelow & Herbert Beglinger. She left home, after graduating high school (with her father acting as principal)  at seventeen, to come East to New Jersey.  After working her way through the depression, she earned enough money on her own to go to nursing school  and become a Nurse. It was to Jesus Christ, the her family, the Nursing Profession, people in need, & little children, who she dedicated her life to. Betty(Gram), had the revolutionary spirit of her ancestor, Anna Fiske, who, left alone with 5 children,  after the death of her husband, donated sums of money to help the revolutionary cause.   Her youngest child was only two years old, however she  also had sons that fought in the war.  Anna was very active in the wartime cause, and for such is honored as a woman patriot in the D.A.R. Gram did not hesitate to tell people her opinions on highly conflicting issues, and always stood firm in her beliefs.  She hated the fact that many people used the dollar as an excuse for being a human being, and pretty much gave away just about everything she ever had.  She never had much, but she was the richest lady I ever knew, who graced my life with her values and her love unfailingly. For her belief in Jesus Christ as the Son of God, her embrasure of the truth, I know that today, that she is in paradise. I cannot help but feel a void, from the loss of such a wonderful lady.  She was unique, unquestionably eccentric, and undeniably deep of heart.  She loved wholly.
Betty's favorite Hymn:  "In the Garden"
Favorite Christmas Carol:  Oh Holy Night  & Silent Night
Most hated colors:  Black & White
Favorite colors:  Jewel colors
Favorite Song:  "I Can't Get Started"
Hated Food:  Chicken/poultry
Favorite Pastime:  The "Boob Tube" and fill in puzzle books
Favorite animals:  Allegro, her cat (whom she shared with her great grandson Andrew), Samson & Bennie dogs, and Casper cat.
And she did not like Clinton as president.....lol
(She got her wish, we now have George Bush, jr. -2001)
February 25, 2001
"It has been about 2 1/2 years since Gram left us, but I miss her as much as I did.  There is no female companionship here.  I got used to being alone at night (not including the kids).  Gram and I could talk and talk or keep companionable silence and do our own thing, but we both knew we were there for each other, day or night.
Some part of me feels like I let her down...perhaps I didn't do something, like CPR or something.  I was so afraid I might do the wrong thing, so I covered her and put a pillow under her head, while I called 911.  They sent an emergency person right away...couldn't have been more than 15 minutes.  She collapse around 8 PM and died at Port Jervis Hospital at 9:40 PM.  It was a rough thing.  One of the roughest in my life.  She was so beloved by the entire family and we all feel the same.
Marc has dreams of her all of the time.  I don't. I have her perfume and when I am feeling lonely, I will put a little on, to remember her comforting scent. What an amazing woman she was (still is in heaven)!  She was so spunky...a spitfire, but also had grace in her older years. She was so much more peaceful the last few years, than I remember her earlier. She was a fighter, because she had to be, raising two children and working full time as a nurse, to provide.  Her family was removed from her, and was not really close. She taught us to be strong....She faced a lot of death as a nurse and knew what it would do to us. How badly it can ravage your heart.  The ONLY thing that keeps me healing, is the Lord, because He is my only hope in this life, and in the next.  It is amazing!  My vision of her proved that to me."

It is with great sadness that I announce the passing on of my Grandmother, Elizabeth Jane Von Suskil (10), at age 81.  She passed on suddenly, on October 5th 1998, while residing with me, in Montague, NJ. She is survived by her daughter, June A Smiraldi of Vernon, NJ, Howard Von Suskil, five Grandchildren, Lisa Beth Christiansen of Montague, NJ, Richard Smiraldi of New York City, NY, Marc Smiraldi of Vernon, NJ, Jennifer Von Suskil, and Drew Von Suskil of Butler, NJ, and Great- Grandchildren, David and Andrew Christiansen of Montague, NJ.
"Betty" was born in Superior, Wisconsin, on December 2, 1916.  After the death of her mother, Dee Anne Beglinger, she left her home, at the age of sixteen, to graduate high school, and continue on in nursing school, to become a nurse. She worked as an R.N. until she was 77 years old, and forced to retire.Upon retirement, she moved in with her granddaughter, Lisa Christiansen (me) and her family, where she could watch her great-grandsons grow up. My Grandmother was very proud of her Bigelow heritage, and it is spoken of quite a bit at a website we have created in her honor.  She was very proud of her mother, Dee Anne Bigelow-Beglinger.(see above)
Please feel free to quote anything in my websites for inclusion :-) in the Forge.  Also, a photo of Dee Anne Bigelow is attached (my Grandmother's mother)

Betty appeared without physical infirmity (no glasses, small perfect nose, etc.)
of an indeterminate age.  She was vital, assured, possessed wisdom, and spoke without moving her lips.  She smiled and said she was "Supremely Happy."
Her garment was similar to a church robe, voluminous, and multicolored, like a stained glass window.  The colors themselves seemed to possess a life on their own, and continually changed into other colors.  The colors were vibrant as God's light was reflected on them.

                              ELIZABETH BEGLINGER VON SUSKIL

Born in Superior, Wisconsin, to Dea (Dee Anne) Bigelow & Herbert Beglinger,

she left home, after graduating high school (with her father acting as principal)  at seventeen, to come East to New Jersey.

Written by:  Lisa Beth Bigelow Christiansen, her granddaughter

Betty's favorite Hymn:  "In the Garden"

Favorite Christmas Carol:  Oh Holy Night  & Silent Night

Most hated colors:  Black & White

Favorite colors:  Jewel colors

Favorite Song:  "I Can't Get Started"

Hated Food:  Chicken/poultry

Favorite Pastime:  The "Boob Tube" and fill in puzzle books

Favorite animals:  Allegro, her cat (whom she shared with her great grandson Andrew), Samson & Bennie dogs, and Casper cat.

And she did not like Clinton as president.....lol
(She got her wish, we now have George Bush, jr. -2001)

February 25, 2001

It has been about 2 1/2 years since Gram left us, but I miss her as much as I did.

My vision of her proved that to me.
